1 pointsRead the following passages carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Passage
Winter is a season of short days, long nights and often, intense cold, and an altogether dreary time of the year in higher altitudes. For some people and places, it’s far worse. The cold moist air traps pollutants and the whole thing hangs in a toxic cloud that takes hours of sun to dissipate. The smog that we see over large urban agglomerates is a soup of poisonous chemicals and solid particles that find their way into every organism, causing various degrees of harm. Indeed the World Health Organisation (WHO) has an index of pollution with amber and red alerts being the worst.
The other day, Beijing issued a red alert for the first time ever, with monitors showing some areas having more than 250 micrograms per cubic metre of poisonous particles. The WHO considers anything over 25 micrograms unsafe. So, Beijing was 10 times worse than unsafe. According to Greenpeace, the smog covered an area the size of Spain. At some places, visibility was down to 200 metres. Lest Indians feel complacent, our own cities are among the world’s most polluted areas with Delhi topping this dubious table. At this level, it is actually hazardous even to breathe. A recent report said children and police were the most at risk of respiratory illnesses and that living in Delhi could result in children with stunted growth.According to the passage, what will be the negative effect of the winter season in a city with high pollution level?

After being the leading economy in the world for over two decades with its exports-led economic growth model, China has finally been admitted into the global currency elite of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) reserve currency list. From October next year, the Yuan or Renminbi (RMB) will form part of the “basket” of currencies from which the IMF derives the value of its own reserve asset, the Special Drawing Rights or SDRs. The basket of currencies includes the US dollar, British pound, euro and the Japanese yen.
But Yuan’s entry into the IMF’s elite basket is fraught with fears – not completely unfounded though. First, China’s model of success from 1979 has been based on trade surpluses and domestic investment. Now, the leadership would loathe changing that even though domestic growth has slowed down and there is a glut in much of the infrastructure sector. The Chinese leadership is also known for its propensity to devalue the Yuan often to make the country’s exports cheaper, which in turn led to its huge trade surplus. The other elite countries are all market democracies, with well-established rule of law. These institutional advances preceded their becoming issuers of currencies dependable and liquid enough for other countries to use them as reserves.According to the passage, what does global currency elite group constitute of?

Passage
More than a quarter of India’s population, spread across 254 districts in 10 states, is affected by drought, one of the severest the country has witnessed in recent times. And it’s only mid-summer. The monsoon is more than a month away and in most parts of the parched nation, it will be at least two months before the rains arrive. A scary scenario, indeed. But the situation was not entirely unexpected. The summer has been getting hotter and hotter every year, and water scarcity severe. With the monsoon failing in 2015, the drought was looming as early as September last year. While the mounting farmer suicides indicated the worsening agrarian crisis, a weak Northeast Monsoon foretold the impending water shortage. But there was hardly any effort, either by the Centre or the states, to prepare for the situation. Every one kept talking about the drought that was expected but no one did anything about it. Typically, Karnataka is one of the worst affected states with 27 of its 30 districts facing a water crisis. Wells and rivers have gone dry, and with the summer heat touching new highs, people are migrating en masse in search of greener pastures and resorting to distress sale of cattle. Neighbouring Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are not better off either. Reservoirs are drying up and the heat has already claimed more than 80 lives in Telangana, where over 300 died last year.According to the passage, what proportion of India’s population is affected by the current drought situation?

Passage
There are still a few people in northern Europe who think that global warming might not be such a bad thing. In Britain, where summer can sometimes seem to last little more than a few weeks, many would welcome the idea of it getting a bit hotter. Unfortunately things are not so simple. Global warming doesn’t just mean that the world will slowly get warmer. Paradoxically, it could cause certain areas to get colder – a lot colder. The latest predictions are that northern Europe could even be plunged into an ice age. While areas of south-eastern Europe, such as Greece, would continue to get hotter and drier, Britain could find itself, in the winter months at least, surrounded by sea ice. The reason for this concerns the Greenland ice sheet. This is one of the biggest expanses of ice in the world – around 1,500km long and 600km wide. It is so big that if it all melted sea levels would rise by 7 meters. Due to rising emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide from the combustion of fossil fuels, this ice sheet is melting at an alarming rate. Why people of Northern Europe think that global warming might not be such a bad thing?

Passage
An air quality index (AQI) is a way to combine measurements of multiple air pollutants into a single number or rating. This index is ideally kept constantly updated and available in different places. The AQI is most useful when lots of pollution data are being gathered and when pollution levels are normally, but not always, low. In such cases, if pollution levels spike for a few days, the public can quickly take preventive action (like staying indoors) in response to an air quality warning. Unfortunately, that is not urban India. Pollution levels in many large Indian cities are so high that they remain well above any health or regulatory standard for large part of the year. If our index stays in the Red/Dangerous’ region day after day, there is not much any one can do, other than getting used to ignoring it.Which among the following is the most logical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage?

Productive jobs are vital for growth and a good lob is the best form of inclusion. More than half of our population depends on agriculture, but the experience of other countries suggests that the number of people dependent on agriculture will have to shrink if per capita incomes in agriculture are to go up substantially. While industry is creating jobs, too many such jobs are low-productivity non-contractual jobs in the unorganized sector, offering low incomes, little protection, and no benefits. Service jobs are relatively of high productivity, but employment growth in services has been slow in recent years.Which among the following is the most logical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage?

The Supreme Court order banning the registration of diesel vehicles beyond 2000 cc in and around New Delhi points to the dire situation and need for drastic steps. It is not necessary, therefore, to discuss the pros and cons of a three-month long ban on a trial basis. The court consciously targeted only luxury vehicles, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), besides big trucks, affordable to affluent people sparing the common man. It concurred with the argument that diesel vehicles pollute the most contributing to pollution. Experts have maintained that “diesel exhaust consists of 10-100 times (that is, one to two orders of magnitude) more particles than petrol”. Moreover, diesel exhaust is said to contain smaller particles which are more hazardous as they enter the deeper recesses of lungs and stay longer causing serious harm to health.
The industry, both automobile manufacturers and distributors, predictably raised a hue and cry claiming the decision would affect trade and commerce and movement and supply of essential commodities in the city. The industry had been trying to pass the buck by lobbying on two grounds — one, that diesel is not as dirty as environmentalists claim it to be and two, there were other more dangerous sources of pollution which should be tackled first. When faced with an adverse judgment, Corporates seek new scientific studies and proof.According to the passage, the Supreme Court has exempted which type of diesel vehicles from the registration banning list?

A recent Standard & Poor (S&P) Ratings Services Global Financial Literacy Survey said that about 76 per cent of Indian adults do not adequately understand key financial concepts, including risk diversification, inflation and compound interest. This is lower than the worldwide average of financial literacy, but roughly in line with other BRICS and South Asian nations. More than 1,50,000 adults across over 140 countries were interviewed and tested on their knowledge of four basic financial concepts: Numeracy, risk diversification, inflation and compound interest (saving and debt).
The findings are interesting. For instance, in India, 26 per cent of adults in the richest 60 per cent of households are financially literate, compared to 20 per cent of adults in the poorest 40 per cent of households. In contrast, globally, 36 per cent of adults in relatively richer households and 27 per cent of adults in relatively poorer households are financially literate. Further, only 14 per cent of Indian adults correctly answered the question on risk diversification. Conversely, 56 per cent answered the inflation question correctly. About 39 per cent of adults who have a formal loan are financially literate, while 27 per cent of formal borrowers were found to be not financially literate. Moreover, just 51 per cent of the respondents understood what compound interest is.According to the Global Financial Literacy Survey, Indian Adults do not understand which of the below financial concepts?

We are witnessing a dangerous dwindling of biodiversity in our food supply. The green revolution is a mixed blessing. Over time farmers have come to rely heavily on broadly adapted, high yield crops to the exclusion of varieties adapted to the local conditions. Mono cropping vast fields with the same genetically uniform seeds helps boost yield and meet immediate hunger needs. Yet high-yield varieties are also genetically weaker crops that require expensive chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides. In our focus on increasing the amount of food we produce today, we have accidentally put ourselves at risk for food shortages in future.Which among the following is the most logical and critical inference that can be made from the above passage?

An increase in human-made carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could initiate a chain reaction between plant and microorganisms that would unsettle one of the largest carbon reservoirs on the planet soil In a study, it was found that the soil, which contains twice the amount of carbon present in a plants and Earth’s atmosphere combined, could become increasingly volatile people add more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This is largely because of increased plant growth. Although a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, carbon dioxide also supports plant growth. As trees and other vegetation flourish in a carbon dioxide-rich future, their roots could stimulate microbial activity in soil that may in turn accelerate the decomposition of soil carbon and its relsase into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.Which among the following is the most logical corollary to the above passage ?
